Most people don't remember the sway the PS2's DVD playback had in Japan, do they? That functionality and a good supply made for a great launch in Japan.

Some numbers for you noobs:
PS2 at 22 weeks - about 2,400,000
GCN at 22 weeks - about 1,150,000
PS3 at 22 weeks - 825,901
Wii at 22 weeks - 2,270,495
Or let's put it this way:
At 25 weeks on sale, the PS3 has not sold as many as the PS2 has sold in it's first 2 weeks in Japan. And at 25 weeks, the PS3 has only sold as many as the GCN had in it's first 15 weeks.

"The sales of the PSX and the PS2 were very poor at first, and for quite a while. The PS2 especially suffered from a drought of software in its first year in Japan, and a continuous system shortage lasting a long time as well."
Completely and utterly WRONG. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
The PS2 sold almost a million in it's first DAY on sale in Japan, and at this point had sold slightly more then the Wii.
darc requiem - yeah, you're right. It's clear from the post I quoted above that many of these kids do not know any of the facts either, which is what I'm trying to fix. But people only believe what they want to believe until they're faced with it.

Who wants to bet, the only changes we will see in this line up for a LONG while, will be the PS3 and PS2 changing places.

Sure.
DS lite will surpass everything.

combined DS sales(phat and lite) are goin to pass ps2 in japan.
and i think that if the DSlite maintains these incredible sales. it will pass the ps2 alone.

Another half a year and total DS sales for DS and DSL should reach 20 million plus exceeding the sales figures of the PS2.

cthu : remeber that ps2 was released with no competition. sold poorly at first . then when the gcn /xbox appeared. it had quite a big advantage so 3rd parties started to make games for it.
in the case of the ps3 it lauched with the competition it havent had a year of advantage.
but i still think its early to count the ps3 out

cthu, patience is key, but why be patient when there's something else out, that you can get right now, and it has better games/your friends have it/ cheaper.
D.lo, that's a bit of a stretch.
really though, the dreamcast should've done better than the ps2, it was a more powerful system, it had a ton of good games, it's had backing from many different companies, etc. The problem is that the sales got to low for them to recover, and that may happen with the ps3 as well. If the ps3 sales keep dropping, even something like MGS and FF will only keep life in it, but not bring it to the front of the pack. That could be very bad for sony.

Complaining about the PS3 has practically become an artform it seems. ;)
The sales of the PSX and the PS2 were very poor at first, and for quite a while. The PS2 especially suffered from a drought of software in its first year in Japan, and a continuous system shortage lasting a long time as well.
Both systems had much better performance overseas at launch as the overseas launches happened considerably later with a larger amount of games available.
I had a PS2 about a month after the system launched in Japan. The only thing I played on it for almost half a year was Tekken Tag Tournament.
Patience is key. :D

D.Lo, let it go man. They will just have to see for themselves. These same type of discussions went on when the PS1 began its rise. Nintendo fans insisted that things would pick up for the N64. The PS3 is actually selling worse than the N64. The 360 has sold more software in Japan than the PS3. The PS3 has out sold the 360 2.5 to 1 in Japan. Thats not good, especially when you consider that the PS3 sells for the cheapest in Japan. Thats more losses for Sony without the software sales to make up for it.
The current generation of gamers grew up on Playstation. They simply can't fathom anyone but Sony being the industry leader. I can identify with them. I never thought Nintendo would be surpassed by Sony back in late 90s. Its the nature of the industry.

"I personally think the PS3 will be on the rise big time by 2009."
No console has ever come from behind like that ANYWHERE. It would require something historic to happen.
"Until more heavy hitters show up on the PS3 game list, sales will slag. It was the same with the PSX, PS2, and DS. I wouldn't count it out yet."
None of those consoles ever 'slagged' in sales anywhere near this bad...

d.lo your comments are so exaggerated, that I like them!
Definitely, Sony is over in Japan. I KNOW SONY IS NOT AS BAD AS MICROSOFT (that's for neko and terp), but it is sure going down.
I wonder what would have happen if Sony didn't release the PSP O.O
2009: Sony's end in videogame industry? I don't want to predict, but it's not so crazy.

Lol, ok your entitled to your opinion/prediction. I personally think the PS3 will be on the rise big time by 2009. The price will have come down substantially and they will finally have some good games out. Maybe not so much in Japan, but the rest of the world yeah, they'll be doing just fine.

I was only talking about Japan. It truly is game over for Sony in Japan.
That said, it will also happen worldwide, just delayed 1 year. That's what happened with the DS...
You read it here first: Sony going 3rd party in 2009.

Naw, it's not game over for Sony. I'm telling you guys, the PS3 will have a grand relaunch in a year and a half - 2 years from now. The price will be cut, there will already be a lot of good software out for it, and it will grow and take over from there.
The problem with this gen was that it was pushed too quick. MS jumped the gun with the 360...which was probably in their best interest...but they caused Sony to push out their system way quicker than they wanted to, making it more expensive than they wanted to at the same time.
Sony's in a tricky position, though. Because of the amount of time it's going to take the PS3 to start rolling, they're going to have to keep it on the market much longer than the normal cycle of a system. Which means that Nintendo will be in the position to drop another innovative new console 4-5 years from now that could be more powerful than the PS3 and steal Sony's wind once again.
It will be interesting, that's for sure.

I'm not denying Nintendo will probably win Japan. I was a firm believer in that scenario well before the Wii came out. What I'm saying is it's way to early to be calling an end to the console sales race worldwide and the "end" of Sony's game division. I can't believe you think Sony is just gonna stop making games, lol. I guarantee you that won't happen.

d.lo 5.9.2007 at 12:33:37 PM
"Nintendo winning Japan doesn't guarantee that they will come in on top overall"
Lucky they're winning worldwide too then eh? At current sales rates, the Wii could surpass the 360's LTD in JUNE!!
And I thought this was about Japan anyway...
"it's still way to freaking early to be calling it "game over""
Not in Japan. You don't come back from 8:1.
"Even if the PS3 continues to tank and they come out 3rd overall you really think that it will be the end of Sony???"
In games, yes. Soon the PS3 will be dropping behind the DREAMCAST in sales (for how long it's been out). And Unlike Nintendo, Sony doesn't have the 1st party strength to survive by themselves.
"You're dreaming, wake up."
Today's denial will be tomorrow's pain for you.

Nintendo winning Japan doesn't guarantee that they will come in on top overall. Granted it's a very good step in the right direction but it's still way to freaking early to be calling it "game over", and calling it "game over" for Sony is absurd. Even if the PS3 continues to tank and they come out 3rd overall you really think that it will be the end of Sony??? You're dreaming, wake up.

If Nintendo can keep supply up, and sales stay like they are for both, the DS will surpass the PS2's lifetime total in 101 days, or sometime early August. Think about that for a second.
Also, with this push, the Wii is actually selling better then the DS for the same point in it's life. And if it sells 100k for another two weeks, it will be ahead of where the PS2 was at the same point in it's life.
It's freaking game over, there is absolutely no way Sony can come back, the generation, and possibly Sony, are over.

I've been waiting to see someone pounce on that Terp, you're the 2nd person to say something now. Makes me want to put in my application to help these guys out, but my writing skills are sub-par at best. And I procrastinate when it comes to writing. I've known about my final paper that is due in an hour and a half all semester and I just now did it. With an hour and a half left to spare. GOTTA LOVE COLLEGE!

Thursday is going to be interesting, to say the least.
I wonder if there were supply issues? If there were, I wonder how high the numbers for the DS and Wii would have been... makes you wonder, if you have enough food, how much will the people eat?

If you were to believe some people, those 101 Gamecubes that were dropped from the previous week's sales may have been used to create 50 Wiis to fill demand. You know, the Wii being two Gamecubes duct taped together and all... :p

I love seeing a console break the quarter-million mark in a single week, especially when that big week happens to put the console above 10,000,000 lifetime sales. 16.6 million DSes in Japan. That's not too far away from the worldwide total of PSP sales.
Also, it's good to see the Wii break 100k. Both Nintendo consoles easily managed to outsell the rest of the list combined, and together, the Wii and DS make up 85% of the hardware sales for the week. That a big chunk of nintendo pie right there.

Quite the awesome boost for DS and Wii. This week we saw DS Lite break 10 million total and by the end of May, it will definitely reach 3 million for 2007 alone.
8 out of 10 systems seeing an increase in sales is great overall, and it's good seeing PS3 outsell PS2...though that gap really should be a lot wider. Well, here's to this Thursday.

I doubt Nintendo can improve much on those numbers unless they've put a lot of effort into stockpiling units the past few weeks. Last i heard Nintendo's hardware sales in Japan are _still_ limited by supply, not demand. Not that i won't be happy if i'm proven wrong and everyone sees massively increased sales across the board this week of course, but i'm not expecting it.

jesusfreakdk: The PS3 barely managed to outsell the PS2, and is actually in worse shape regarding its competiton with the Wii. Last week, the Wii sold 7 times what the PS3 did. This week, it exceeds 8 times.
Nintendo's on a roll, and I'm extremely excited to see Revenant Wings doing well. The more SE games that are received well for Nintendo's consoles, the more we'll get.

Wow. High sales across the board. Perhaps due to the holiday? Nothing new, though, really. The Nintendo systems continue to sell like hotcakes, and the PSP retains decent sales. Looks like the PS3 managed to defeat its predecessor this time. :P
