GamesAreFun is currently here in Austin, Texas, reporting from this year's Austin Game Developers Conference. For our first article straight from the show floor, we have a bit of
Guitar Hero news.
Earlier today at the conference, GAF had a chance to speak with Adrian Earle, design manager for
Vicarious Visions. Adrian was quiet on most of VV's current projects, but kindly slipped us a few details on the recently-confirmed
Guitar Hero DS.
When we asked about the graphical style of
Guitar Hero DS, Adrian responded that the visuals are actually consistent with the other games in the
Guitar Hero series. That pretty much rules out cartoony cel-shading or 2-D character sprites, in favor of the established 3D
Guitar Hero "look."
But more importantly, and perhaps more surprisingly, Adrian told us that - unlike
Ubisoft's
Jam Sessions -
Guitar Hero DS won't even use the stylus as a primary input. Instead, you'll hit your notes via a brand new peripheral! The peripheral design isn't quite finalized yet, so you can let your imaginations go to work. However, Adrian promised us that we'd "absolutely love it." Strong words, but we believe him. Vicarious Visions seems to be upholding the integrity of the
Guitar Hero brand, by keeping the classic style and peripheral-based gameplay.
Keep an eye on GamesAreFun over the next few days as we bring you more tasty tidbits from the Austin GDC.

yeah, pretty interesting, but the peripheral must be very small to make sense.

No forget it, I'll stay off this boat, because I hate MTV too. That may sound strange but there you go. I'm getting a very dark feeling in my gut about their involvement, that they are gonna leech of this whole thing more that Square do off FF.
Because of MTV, this game has tipped the playing field totally, I applaud GH success, even if it has ripped off Guitar Freaks.
Agree to disagree, at least Jam Sessions, Nodame Cantible and Ouendan/EBA are enough for me.

But the more I think about it, the stranger a DS Wireless Guitar becomes. Particularly when you have such a small screen to look at.
If they made the adapter the right way, maybe it could recognize RedOctane's wireless guitars for the Wii and other systems. In addition, the 2 screens would display each person's frets in multiplayer.
Trying to make a holster/grip guitar for two models of DS just doesn't make sense, and wouldn't handle well at all.

Even though I'm a big fan of Guitar Hero and music games in general, I have to say I don't really see the point of GH DS with a peripheral. I mean, if you're at home, you might as well play GH with the regular guitar controller on your TV. And if you're on the road, you wouldn't want to carry around a peripheral. Unless it's like some super mini guitar. Not sure how that would work, though. I guess this could be good if you're at someon's house without access to a PS2, but eh. I look forward to seeing exactly how they do this.

I really wanna know what this peripheral is like, and how portable it is.
I mean, I can stick a DS in my pocket, but a guitar?

I love the idea of the wireless hyper.
and oni, thats cool you made your point, but actually, yes, it is about the game still. the only one that wasn't was the shameless cash in called Rocks the 80s.
Both companies know they need to keep innovating within their games in order to keep up, one thing that makes it great that there is that competition there. so we win even more.
I can see how you say you aren't that interested because you aren't that big of a fan of rock, but I know tons of people that never listen to rock that love it as well, even when they have no interest in real guitar. It's a rhythm game. but oh wells.

I'd like to add that the reason Ouendan was such a hit was because it was hilarious fun, that you didn't care about the music as much, even on japanese import.
GH and RB are music selling vehicles now, not games really any more.

Bouncyx, I'm not raggin on GH for the sake of it, it looks like a fun game. Problem is it isn't really about the game any more, but whoring out music track to gamers, something the money grabbing music industry is loving, no doubt.
One reason I think GH on DS is a bad idea, is because more deserving titles like Jam Sessions, which actually lets you create your own music, may also get overlooked, by an all formats game. That would be sad.
How do I live with myself? Plenty of other games to play, and rock isn't the only type of music on the planet, can't say I'm a great fan of it. I don't play any instruments and if I did it wouldn't be guitar.
And I hate peripherals, let alone expensive Ds ones.

This is new; a peripheral?
Okay, maybe a wireless guitar that communicates with an adapter in the GBA slot?

Somehow, my outlook for this peripheral is grim, mainly because I'm banking on the probability that it won't be like the ps2 guitars. Mebbe the game wont be so bad, though. We'll have to see.
Ouendan is bitchin. Seriously. I'd be hard-pressed to find a rhythm game for the DS that tops it.

Ok. What?
"I haven't played or bought any of the GH series yet." "EBA/Ouendan is still king as far as I'm concerned,"
then lets repeat
"I haven't played or bought any of the GH series yet."
how do you live with yourself?! :O
but seriously. I don't understand how people can like games and not have (at the very least) played GH, let alone not like it.
and NO, it's not the same as playing the real guitar for you 'elitists' out there that say the reason they don't play is because they play real guitar. Get over yourself.

Sounds interesting. I haven't played or bought any of the GH series yet. I might but the peripheral bit worries me.
EBA/Ouendan is still king as far as I'm concerned, as not everyone digs rock music that much.

portable guitar hero!? I'll take it..
I think it will be nothing like playing a guitar or like guitar hero in general, but it should prove to be a fun rhythm game.
