News - GAF turns 7 years old

Thank you for coming to GAF. Those of you who are reading this know that GAF has had a rough year. But you are the faithful, the true fans. And I can't thank you enough for supporting our little site.
Over the past seven years, we've seen a lot of good times. I've worked with several dozen staff members. Some of them have gone on to do professional work in games journalism as well as the games industry itself. We've been at many different conferences, worked with a lot of people in the games industry, reviewed hundreds of games, and generally had a fantastic time covering games.
I won't get too long-winded though. In honor of our starting our 8th year covering games, we're going to record another podcast. It's one of our most requested features so it's about time we get back to them. Expect that to come out some time this weekend. We've also got a new design in the works, but it's still early so I don't have a date for that yet.
Once again, thanks to all of you who have come here over the past seven years and I hope you'll join me and the staff at GAF for many more.
P.S. As usual, because April Fools is our birthday, GAF will not be playing any pranks this year. No folks, the next Smash Bros was not announced yet and Sephiroth will not be in it. Neither will Master Chief. Really.

I remember when I logged into this site for the first time back in 2003.
Loved this site ever since.
Keep it going guys...keep it going. :)

Haha, gimmick or not, all I'm saying is that I became convinced it would sell.
I love my Wii, but the number of games that I own that truly need the Wii remote is probably just two. Others make good use of it, but could be done with other methods.

Indeed, I remember those articles. I found out from IGN about the "Revolution" remote, and then headed right over here to see what everyone was saying. And then later, as soon as I heard the name "Wii," I promptly headed to this site and continued the string of immature "Wii" jokes and proclaimed that Nintendo was the stupidest company ever if they thought that the name "Wii" was cool and would sell....
To my credit, that was a knee-jerk reaction, and within 3 months of the name-revealing, I had seen enough of the Wii to become fairly convinced that it was indeed the next big thing.

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the most commented article was either the unveiling of the Nintendo Wii or the huge uproar when we found out Nintendo was actually naming it Wii. Both sparked hundreds of comments.

Ah, many good GAF memories. I'd be impressed if we ever beat our record for most comments in an article. What could spark 500 comments, I don't know, but I hope GAF gets there in popularity someday! My personal prediction is that GAF will start getting up there again as whispers about the next gen lead into information starting to come through to the masses (via GAF, of course.)
Happy B-day, GAF! Been a big follower ever since my good friend linked me to the site ages ago and I'm glad you're still around and hope you will be for quite some time now. =) Keep it up, Rich!

Wow, comments! Feels like the good ole days.
Thanks for gracing my homepage on every computer I have ever owned/used. Through good times and bad, GAF makes it happen. Good to see some familiar names pop up here too, seems like people are stickin around.
Happy lucky number 7!

For the GDC stuff, we only had one person there: me. And I was a conference associate, so I was volunteering. When I wasn't working I was trying to get to some sessions (and I've got the stories to support that).
I plan on putting up a couple entries for the entire 5-day conference. I'm writing it up now and want to get it up within two days.

Man, I just went back and read that DSi news thread that eggman was talking about.. I'm sad to have missed out on that, actually. I actually would have defended terpfen. I kind of miss the high drama, hahaha...

Wasn't she some chick bjork had the hots for?
And yeah, dizzy was pretty funny, I've gotta admit. Like his comments that were always something along the lines of:
I'M SHAKING MY LUIGI DOLL IN ANGER!

i_like_pizza 4.3.2009 at 03:54:21 PM
Hahahahaha, I went back through some old articles (circa 2006), and I determined it was indeed Dizzy that was the neg karma king. It didn't take me long at all to find a -26. What a clown. I wish we still had dizzy.
Btw, I was looking back through my comments from the days when the PSP vs DS war was uncertain and the Wii and PS3 were about to launch... I am fairly certain I am some sort of sales forecasting genius. :P Not to mention my prediction for 360 sales was spot on, and I was nearly on the month of the Wii overtaking the 360, just under a year before it occurred. I wish I was still as up on sales as I used to be. I don't really keep track of them any more.
GAF, we need sales updates. Those threads were always the most crowded with comments (both fanboys and non-fanboys alike). The sales threads are awesome.

It might have been dizzy. I certainly remember his comments being hidden all the time, but for some reason, that name doesn't ring out in my head saying, "THAT'S IT!"

i_like_pizza; I think I know who you mean. Was his name something like DizzyDonMega? His comments were always hidden LOL. Those were the boom days of GAF; all the unique personalities contributing. I did love nekofrog's Nintendo comments though ;-)
This site will return to its former glory. I have faith!

Yes, PLEASE fix the "large lack of news articles" problem with this site. This is a great site for getting MULTIPLATFORM news all nice in a simple line (organized by date of course).
Compare this site to the news portion of Gamespot for example. AUUGH My eyes -_-
^_^
In the mean time tho I've got to find a new temporary (I hope :) news site so I don't MISS news..
Any suggestions? :-D (needs to be multiplatorm videogame news (including portables).
Thanks!
.

I liked Paul Gale, too. It's too bad a few of the members seemed to hate him so much and kind of drove him away. If nothing else, it at least made the comments a little more interesting because there were a few people who would ALWAYS argue with Paul Gale no matter what he said.

I remember when I first set my homepage to GAF roughly 7 years ago, in 2002. To this day, I love opening up my web browser and being greeted with not only a nice site design, but also with the news that I want to see.
I sure hope that more folks can get back into reporting and making articles here, because it's been hard having to put up with messier site designs to get my news fill.

Not so many fanboy wars here. It's pretty much all pro-Nintendo, if anybody is ever picking sides. But usually there's no controversy, really. Everyone seems to appreciate every console.

jesusfreakdk: That's because it was a me banner, not a Burk banner. Plus, it was a me at midnight banner; no inspiration or energy at all. I think it gets the job done until Burk sees it and is so horrified that he makes an awesome one.
daetrin: There was a duplicate comment that was deleted. Looks like I have a bug to fix in my comment counting code!

The new banner made me chuckle a bit. Not bad by any means, but far from the accomplished work usually done by Burk. Nevertheless, the message couldn't be clearer: GAF is 7 years old! And what a journey it's been. Having been here for at least 4-5 years, despite the struggles and low points it gives me pleasure to see the site still up. It may be hanging on by a mere thread, but there's no doubt in my mind that GAF will rise up to be bigger and better than it ever was.
I say this every year, but a big thanks to Rich, the staff (both former and present), and the great community here.

Deep within the womb of time,
a creature thus be born
The seed of life is united with
the egg of tyranny
Gestates forth from within the womb of life
for three-quarter and nigh a year
The creature thus be born!
The creature thus be formed!
And ye of years....
Seven!
Will chime!
When the heavens open up
and drink from the silver cup
The creature thus be born!
And blow the magic horn!
To alert the spirit deep within the cycle of life.
The creature has begun it's journey deep forlorn,
upon this day which he be formed
In the sea of mucus the spirit rides down from the mountain
and unites with the creature in the womb
A holy union, dark mortality, until the dark mortality
breaks the chain of life
The creature thus be born
And every year raineth down the celebratory tears
A celebration of the years
from mere mortal sky
